ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS/INFORMATION

Living Accommodations
Because the last two years of the residency program and call for continuity patients takes place in Monroe, residents of the Carolinas Medical Center-Union Family Practice Residency Program are required to reside in Union County. The commute to Charlotte from any location in Union County is very reasonable. This living arrangement also allows residents and their families, if applicable, to experience the full spectrum of life in a small town.

Applying to the Program
Applications for this program are only accepted via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). In personal statements, applicants considered for this program must explain why they wish to enter this residency program and be a senior medical student or recent medical school graduate. No other method of application other than ERAS will be accepted or acknowledged. A committee will screen the applications based on criteria established at the beginning of each recruitment season. Once selected, candidates will be offered interviews. Applicants will be expected to visit the main program in Charlotte and interview at the program in Monroe. The interview process allows applicants to see both hospitals, as well as meet the residents and faculties at both locations. Housing for one night and dinner with the residents will be provided in Monroe. The rank list for the NRMP "match" will be based on the information obtained from the application, the site visit and interviews. The "match" list will be generated by a Selection Committee appointed by the residency director. The program only accepts first year residents through the NRMP process.

Moonlighting
Moonlighting is permitted in the second and third years of residency within the institution's facilities without additional requirements. Both inside and outside hospital moonlighting are subject to approval by the residency director and vice president for medical education and research. The resident physician must have a permanent, unrestricted North Carolina medical license and provide for his/her own medical malpractice insurance, should he/she desire to moonlight outside the institution. Moonlighting is not permitted when it interferes with the resident's performance in the training program, or when on duty for other required curricular activities.
