Union Family Practice
In 1980, Union Family Practice was established in Monroe by two graduates of the CMC Family Practice Residency Program. Over the years, it has grown to five full-time equivalent family physicians. In 1997, the group (now owned by Carolinas Physician Network, a subsidiary of Carolinas HealthCare System) moved into a large, modern facility with a designated module for the residents' continuity clinics as well as incorporation of other features to facilitate graduate medical education. The resident module has four examination rooms, a procedure room, preceptor/resident work room, a large nursing station and resident workstation. The examination and procedure rooms are connected via a closed circuit television system to facilitate clinical education. Union Family Practice is equipped as any modern family practice office would be - with an administrative area; laboratory, radiology suite, and treadmill/endoscopy rooms; a large staff lounge; and well-equipped conference room. It is located in a newly developed medical park approximately one-half mile from Carolinas Medical Center-Union.

Carolinas Medical Center-Union
A 157-bed, JCAHO-approved general hospital, CMC-Union is the main teaching hospital for the second and third year residents of this residency program. It is a modern, efficient, and well-staffed facility. For a community hospital, it has advanced technology for medical diagnosis, including a cardiac catheterization laboratory, for example. It has a medical staff of more than 120 physicians with over 25 specialties represented. CT, MRI and interventional radiologic procedures are also available on-site. A call room for the residents, several conference rooms, and the office of the site coordinator and residency director are located in the hospital. Unlike many community hospitals, the hospital occupancy rate at URMC is high.

Due to the unprecedented growth in the area, CMC-Union is completing work on a four year, $47 million expansion and renovation project. As part of this expansion, CMC-Union added a 15-bed Clinical Decision Unit and an 85,000 square foot Outpatient Treatment Pavilion. The Pavilion, which opened in October 2002, is home to a comprehensive cancer center offering both medical and radiation oncology, a state of the art imaging department, outpatient laboratory, cardovascular center, rehabilitative services, cardiopulmonary and neurology services, the Diabetes Center, the Lactation Center, the Sleep Center and conference facilities.

Union County Health Department
One of several unique features of this program is the opportunity for the residents to receive a significant portion of their clinical education - especially in women's health, including maternity care, and care of children - at the Union County Health Department (UCHD). UCHD is located in a modern and spacious facility approximately one mile from CMC-Union. It caters to the general health needs of the underserved people in Union County. It offers the family practice residents an opportunity to work with a large Spanish speaking population. It is at these clinics that the residents follow continuity maternity care patients until delivery (thereafter, the families may be followed at Union Family Practice in the residents' continuity clinics). The health department's supervising faculty are physicians employed by the health department and, occasionally, full-time faculty from the residency program. Clinics for colposcopy, family planning, and sexually transmitted diseases provide the residents excellent experiences in women's health. The UCHD is linked via the Internet to electronic medical library services to support resident and staff education.
