CMC-Union operates, often at a deficit, or sponsors certain health services that are essential to the community. Examples of these vital health services include a palliative care program for patients battling life threatening or life limiting illnesses, support to Healthquest which dispenses free medications to the community, a senior resource connection program that assists the elderly in locating proper healthcare, programs to bring new physicians to the community in specialties with unmet needs, clinical site and resources to local colleges for students to develop careers in healthcare and, the Safe Communities Program for injury prevention and child safety programs. The Medical Center also provides financial support to various community programs such as Turning Point which is a facility that provides support to abused women, Habitat for Humanity, and other city and county events. The value of these programs is approximately $1.4 million.
Finally, Carolinas Medical Center-Union and its employees benefit the community by becoming actively involved in, or contributing to, various organizations that seek to improve the overall health and well being of its citizens. Medical Center employees pledged approximately $75,000 to United Way in 2009. The Medical Center and its employees actively donate time and money to countless other charitable organizations such as Healthquest (free pharmacy for the citizens in Union County that cannot afford their prescription drugs), Turning Point, Safe Communities Program, schools and churches just to name a few.
Employees at Carolinas Medical Center-Union contribute in many ways to make their individual communities better places to live, work and play. These investments of time and effort supplement all of the direct and indirect corporate investments which are made to enhance and quality and accessibility of healthcare services for all who need assistance.
